Building a university we are proud of, and one that prides nature
My name is Yolande Booyse, I'm a third year Ecology and Environmental Science student and the current president of the Green Team society. I am running to be your SU President with the sole purpose of pressing our university to commit to reducing our carbon footprint and build on the fantastic work that staff and students have done so far.
So what do I want to change?
Reducing our Carbon Footprint
If we want a world tomorrow, we have to protect our world today. That means making sure we are not draining our precious resources, without giving back what we take from nature. My aim is to press the university for a Net Zero action plan and gain commitments from our leaders, as well as cooperation from our students. We have to live sustainably in everything we do from now on. We know that, and its time to take decisive action. That is my mission.
Letting Wildlife Flourish Around Us
I am currently working on the university’s biodiversity action plan for all campuses and want to continue that. We have to not only protect what is, but we also allow it to flourish and expand. More trees, more birds, more bees…and definitely more hedgehogs!
Putting Sustainability at the Heart of What We Do
I believe that living sustainably is the key to everything. Personal sustainability includes not burning out by making sure you rest during busy periods in your life. Sustainable studies include manageable workloads, moving away from deadline bunching, and meaningful lectures that shape your way of thinking that stay with you for life. Sustainable environments are ones that provide for all of your wellbeing, but not at the cost of another species’ wellbeing.
Together, let’s create a university that we are proud of, and one that prides nature.
