The SU Advice Service is a free, confidential and independent service which helps students with academic issues including suspected breaches, appeals and professional suitability. We can also support with formal complaints, give access to our internal food bank and signpost/refer to other support services.

Last year, we supported 269 students. We know that just under half of these students were in their first year of study at UoG. We understand that the first year at university can be difficult; that’s why we’re there when you need us.

75% of cases and enquiries last year were linked to academic issues, with 90 students experiencing a suspected breach and 69 wishing to appeal a grade. The SU Advice Service supported these students by proofreading documents and emails, checking student evidence and accompanying students to university meetings as a support.

We also supported 34 students to make a complaint regarding their university experience. The issues cited by students ranged from course discrepancies, withdrawals to lack of support in extenuating circumstances. We supported students by attending meetings with them and advising on the complaints process.

We do not always hear the outcome of cases from students. Of the cases where outcomes were reported back to us, 47% achieved a positive result. This meant those students were able to: continue with their course, submit a reassessment, be awarded their assessment grade without an academic misconduct offence, receive financial compensation, receive further support, amongst other resolutions.

Looking ahead to this academic year, the SU Advice Service is hoping to help even more of you that may need support. Keep an eye out for drop in events coming up over this academic year. If you feel you need support from the Advice Service, please get in touch via email: suadvice@glos.ac.uk or via our triage form: SU Advice Service Triage Form – Fill in form.

We would like to develop the service based on your experiences when accessing support through the SU Advice Service, so if you have used the service before we’d love to hear your feedback using this form:  SU Advice Service - Feedback – Fill in form.
