Upolo League Division 2 Men’s South West
Men’s Water Polo vs UWE
19th October 2014 Away
The Men’s Water Polo team set off to play their first match away at UWE. Feeling nervous yet excited, they set off in high spirits. With many new faces to the team, this would be an interesting first game.
UoG were hit hard in the first few minutes of the match, quickly going 4 goals down. A goal from Matthew Sharp spurred the men on, encouraging them to pull together. This was quickly followed by a goal from Tony Coleby. UWE continued their fight, showing what a strong team they are. However, giving away a penalty meant that UoG could build on their score. A successful penalty by Tony Coleby brought the score to 8-3.
A great goal came from new player Ben Jones to halve UWE’s score; which was then sadly disallowed. Club Captain Josh Jobbins stepped up and scored 2 successive goals making the score 10-5. Another goal from Tony Coleby raised the team’s morale, showing their blue and blue spirit.
Nearing the end of the game, the men showed their determination by winning the second half. A few more goals for UoG meant the final score was 15-8 to UWE.
It was an unlucky loss for the first game of the season, but with a team predominantly made up of new players, this was a good start for UoG, with hope for the next game against Bath on 21st November.
Gimp of the Game was awarded to Captain Kieran Adams and keeper Peter Cornish was voted Player of the Match, well done!
