What’s a Course Rep?

In a nutshell

What they do

A Course Rep works with staff in the SU and on your course to improve the academic lives of students. They gather feedback from course mates in whatever way works best for that group, then take it to 1–2 meetings each semester with course and module staff. The aim is simple: turn feedback into solutions that benefit both students and staff.

How a Course Rep can help you

Your go-to person

  • Raise issues with lecturers or course leaders on your behalf
  • Spot patterns in feedback so no one voice gets lost
  • Share quick wins and positive changes with the group
  • Point you to SU services if you need extra support
  • Make sure your experiences help shape the bigger picture across the University

Reps in the SU

Education and Community Council

Reps sit on our Education and Community Council, which meets four times a year. They share course-level feedback with other reps and the SU’s Education and Community Officer, and help shape the SU’s aims and priorities with senior university staff.

Student Council

There’s also the chance to be elected as one of three reps from their School to sit on Student Council, the highest student-led decision-making body in the SU and University.

Training, Support and Recognition

Training and workshops

Every rep gets a one-hour induction. There are ten optional skills workshops to build confidence and boost employability.

Student Voice Community Organisers

Each campus has a Student Voice Community Organiser, a part-time student staff member who supports reps, helps them prepare for meetings, and shares tips for gathering and analysing feedback.

Course Rep Accreditation

Work towards Bronze, Silver or Gold awards that recognise your involvement. Great for a CV or LinkedIn.

Wider opportunities

Support other HE/FE learners in the local area by helping to train and mentor them in their own rep journeys.

Time Commitment

On average, the role takes around 4–5 voluntary hours a month.
