Something special happened last week... Students packed into Oxstalls SU for an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM).
After a brief presentation of the policy and questions from students, the motion to update our democracy structures passed with a unanimous 77–0 vote!
This is an outstanding turnout, and we are grateful for all the members who came along to cast their vote.
We haven’t seen this many students take part in a democratic meeting since 2017 and the atmosphere was energetic and hopeful. People came from across all campuses, whether they were club and society committee members, those hoping to be reps or students wanting their voice to be heard, everyone got involved to reshape democracy.
So, what’s changing? From the next academic year, your Student Council will be supported by three new Sub-Councils:
Education and Community, Activities and Opportunities, and Welfare and Diversity.
Each will be led by the relevant Officer and bring together the students closest to those issues. That means your feedback about courses, activities, or wellbeing will have a clearer route into the heart of Union decision-making and amplifying the student voice.
It’s a simple but powerful shift. If you’ve got an idea, concern, or campaign, you’ll now have more direct ways of turning it into action. And because more students will be involved at every stage, the decisions the Union makes will carry even greater weight.
As your Students’ Union, UoGSU intends to promote and protect the SU-lead student voice across UoG to evolve old student voice mechanisms that are no longer fit for purpose. Students at the EGM voted to build relationships and display the impact of student voice more prominently.
