On Wednesday 13th May, UoG American Football, The Glads, hosted a charity football match at Oxstalls Sports Park, bringing together the Men's and Women's Football Clubs in support of the Join Our Boys Trust.
The event saw players from all three clubs come together for an 11-a-side fixture (plus or minus a few!) creating a fun, inclusive and highly entertaining match. The game showcased the talents of players across different sports while emphasising the power of community, with Men's and Women's Football coming out on top.
More importantly, the match served a greater purpose: raising funds and awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a rare and terminal condition.
Club Captain Aidan Morris spoke about the personal importance of the charity:
"The whole game was so special to me and seeing the UoG community coming together to play or spectate for the Join Our Boys charity match was so deeply rewarding. The charity is special to me because these are my family members from back in Ireland. The charity is about tackling a terminal illness called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). The charity is about 3 brothers who have DMD, The eldest brother Archie unfortunately passed away with it aged 16 and the twins have recently turned 16, however the charity is raising money for research for all victims of the disorder. I have grown up watching them deteriorate and it means the world to me to raise some money and awareness but most importantly put a smile on their faces. The charity’s slogan is “Keep Moving” although simple it is something which has stuck with me my whole life and has a deeper meaning to me. The boys never give up and that’s what the charity represents making them proud means a whole deal to me. Forever thankful to Men and Women’s football for making this possible."
