UoG Dynamite Cheerleaders pride themselves on their work with the local community; providing volunteer coaching to over 9 schools and counting in the Gloucestershire County. Working alongside Active Gloucestershire and the University; members of the Dynamites squad aim to raise physical activity in schools, particularly for young females, by providing pupils with high quality cheerleading coaching.
Coaches construct and teach small routines to all pupils who wish to participate, allowing them to have creative input in their own routines. School teams then meet in April for an inter school competition where they are able to showcase their routine to their teachers and parents as well as competing for the opportunity to win a trophy.
Last year Cheer in Schools was really popular over the cheerleading squad. With over 15 dynamites taking part the children learnt some amazing routines and had an incredible time performing them in competition.
Last week was the first week of our project this year and we have 28 members volunteering their time to coach this year. This project is targeted at secondary schools and the 14-19 lift in sport participation. However, this year we have included a primary school in the programme to see if we can further expand this project in further years. The primary school will be provided with a coach and get taught a routine, they will then be invited to the competition where they can watch the secondary schools and hopefully be inspired. They will then have the chance to perform in the interval to show everyone what they have learnt.
The Cheer in Schools Project was first established by Sophie Exton in 2011, and has since been expanded by Lisa White and Charlotte Hill. This year Cheer in School’s will be further developed by Sarah Dee. This is just a little update on the start of our project and we will continue to keep you informed on how it is progressing.
Thankyou to all the fellow dynamites who have helped keep the project running in previous years and to all of those who are willing and want to get involved this year and we can guarantee you’ll enjoy it as much as the children do and coaches have in the past.
