ALEX MCDONALD

Universities aren't successful, People are! Sports Leadership for the Future!

My name is Alex McDonald (Maccer), I’m a Level 6 Sport Management & Development student and I am running to be your SU Sports Officer for the 2019/2020 academic year. I have been heavily involved in University Sport, particularly as part of Rugby League, over the past four years. My most recent position being Vice Club Captain and I believe that under my leadership University of Gloucestershire Students' Union Sport can progress using the strong foundations already built.

What would I change?

Stronger Links between Sports Teams & Students' Union
Throughout my time at University there has been an inconsistency in the amount of communication between SU Sports Teams and the SU itself. If there is not a strong relationship between the two; the development and progression of teams is being hindered and opportunities for partnerships to be built are being withheld.

Development and Management of Recreational Sport
Currently our Recreational Sport for the University is being outsourced. In order for increased participation this needs to be managed internally by the Students Union in partnership with the outsourced company. There is not enough publicity or emphasis on recreational or social sport at the University, and it is likely with emphasis put on this it will diversify the participation of BUCS sports which will undoubtedly lead to an increase in participation of competitive BUCS sport.

Continuation of No Compulsory Lectures on Wednesdays
With the redundancies made in the School of Sport; it is essential that we insist on the continuation of no compulsory lectures on Wednesdays despite a massive reduction in staff members. There should also be encouragement for other schools, particularly at other campuses, to follow suit. This will aid accessibility to and enjoyment of University Sport.
