Reinstating the university’s alcohol licence and reopening of student bars

The reopening of student bars and reinstating the university’s alcohol license will not only bring life back into campuses across the university, but it will also allow sports and societies to create, host, and attend a larger variety of enjoyable events on campus. Universities across the country use SU bars as a beacon of activity, which allows new students to mix with new people. This is a key part of university life. Areas such as the Laurie Lee building, Francis Close Hall, Oxstalls SU, and Park Campus bar areas catch the attention of many students on open days. However upon arrival, students are left disappointed to see that these bars are left to rot away and wondering what is stopping them from having a beer on their doorstep when the facilities are there for all to see. The lack of activity occurring in these areas may also discourage prospective students from choosing the university. Also, many events hosted by students are often linked with incredible charitable causes and using the areas across the university will improve the events and help raise even more money. Reopening these areas and reinstating the license will bring unity to students across all areas of the university and allow students to make memories in these areas. Ultimately leaving university full of appreciation for those who made these events possible by reopening the bars.

I totally agree that this would turn new students away. It also has meant fundraisers have been forced to be at external venues and those business are instead profiting. With the main issue seeming to be the cost of having the bars open (presumably licensing), it would be beneficial for the SU to be open about their revenue/ profits from the bars in the past too. I find it hard to understand how they aren’t profitable especially when we’re one of the only universities I know that doesn’t sell alcohol. Maybe it’s even worth them communicating across social pages for maximum engagement about a bar menu/ events in the bar to ensure there would be sales for the sake of the SU.
