UoG Refugee Support Society

Taking Action | Raising Awareness | Promoting Advocacy

Welcome to UoG Refugee Support Society. We are a community of likeminded students working together to take action and raise awareness for refugee and asylum seeker causes locally and elsewhere in the world. We will meet to share ideas and make change but are also looking forward to some exciting outings, social,s and get-togethers.

Taking Action

We are working hard in the local community to welcome refugees and asylum seekers to the UK.

We are partnered with Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees, a Cheltenham-based charity committed to supporting refugee families as they settle into life in Cheltenham. With our friends at CWR, we are working hard to funds for projects and generate conversation in the local community. This year we are really happy to offer volunteering at Community Café, where we will be working directly with families and other members of CWR.

We also have a committment to raising funds for causes benefitting communities. This year we are proud to be working on fundraising and advocacy for the Sanctuary Scholarship at UoG, which will give a student from a refugee or asylum seeking background to study at UoG.

We are always actively seeking volunteering and fundraising opportunities with local groups for members to be a part of. We welcome any suggestions and are proud to support any individual looking to make a difference.

Raising Awareness

We are a group looking to expand the discussion around challenges facing refugees and asylum-seeking communities. We welcome students from all disciplines to contribute to our conversation. In the past, we held our "Conversations" series where we invited field workers, other activists, researchers and charity groups to explain their position and give us a call to action. We want to raise the voice of this issue and give it the important platform it deserves. This year we are joining in the conversation around interfaith dialogue, culture shock and what it is really like to experience a refugee camp at the Literature Festival.

Promoting Advocacy

As a society, we want to create a space for people with shared values to come together to talk and listen to one another. We want to allow people to speak up, and for us to speak up collectively, about an issue that is really important. We would like to make a change and influence public policy and opinion by working hard to generate the conversation and make a difference together.
