Taking Action | Raising Awareness | Promoting Advocacy

Welcome!

Welcome to the UoG Refugee Support Society. We are a community of like-minded students working together to take action and raise awareness for refugee and asylum seeker causes locally and elsewhere in the world. We meet regularly to share ideas, campaign and raise funds for local causes, but we are also looking forward to some exciting outings, socials, and get-togethers.

Taking Action

We are working hard in the local community to welcome refugees and asylum seekers to the UK.

We will soon be affiliated with STAR (Student Action for Refugees), which will make us a part of the large student network advocating for the rights of refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK.

We are partnered with Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees, a Cheltenham-based charity committed to supporting refugee families as they settle into life in Cheltenham. This year we are also partnered with Gloucester Welcomes Refugees, to expand our community links in the county.

We are also in the process of planning a trip to Calais in 2023 to work with Refugee Communities Kitchen.

We are always actively seeking volunteering and fundraising opportunities with local groups for members to be a part of. We welcome any suggestions and are proud to support any individual looking to make a difference.

Raising Awareness

We are a group looking to expand the discussion around challenges facing refugees and asylum-seeking communities.

We plan to invite field workers, other activists, researchers, charity groups and politicians to give talks about their experiences and views on refugees and asylum seekers. Keep your eyes open for our ‘Conversations’ series starting in October!

Promoting Advocacy

As a society, we want to create a space for people with shared values to come together to talk and listen to one another. We want to activate people to take action and speak up to challenge the misconceptions around displaced persons and the political challenges related to this movement.

As a group, we promote inclusion, acceptance and kindness and believe this should be at the centre of our action moving forward.
