Academic Appeal

A process by which a student can challenge the outcome of an academic finding, if specific grounds have been met (e.g. procedural irregularities have occurred or extenuating circumstances)

Academic Conduct Officer

A member of staff who is not in the Subject Community or School of the breach they are assessing, that assesses the breach response and breach report to determine if a breach has taken place

Breach

The academic regulations for assessments or exams have been found not to have been followed. The mark for the work is recorded as a breach, with corresponding consequences

Citation

A way to show how you have referenced another's work. A quotation from or reference to another book, author or idea. Different academic schools use different set systems of citing and referencing e.g. Harvard, APA, etc. 

Complaint

A process by which a student can voice dissatisfaction with their treatment or experience during an incident, course, or overall experience

Fitness to Practice

An investigatory process used in response to concerns about a learner's fitness to practice. A learner that is fit to practice will satisfy the University criteria for their health and conduct e.g. not posing a risk to themselves, others, the reputation of and public confidence in a profession, and that they meet the requirements of the professional bodies

Referencing

Acknowledging the source of the information that you have used in your work. This makes it clear how you have used the work of others to develop your own ideas

Suspected breach

An assessment or exam is thought by the marker to have potentially breached the academic regulations. An ‘SB’ grade is recorded in the assessment flag on moodle

Turnitin

A text matching tool that is available through moodle and is used formatively to educate students about plagiarism, as well as investigate any suspected breaches
